HACKING SYSTEMS – link

In our effort to transform old colonial ecosystems, we aim to create independent community digital ecosystems based on new ideas. Instead of using regular methods or violence, we’re looking for different ways to challenge the unfair power of colonial economies that exploited people’s work over time. Our upcoming workshop aims to share ideas and come up with new ones together.

This workshop marks our initiation with Oyoun MediaLab, that offers opportunities to turn concepts into reality by establishing an independent ecosystem through cooperative creation. …

THE JOY OF BEING AN ERROR – link

The body, as a gendered material, is seeking a way to reshape a world in which participation would be possible. At a deeper level of this approach to machinic or digital systems, where colonial ideas still dominate the non-white world, we no longer wish to participate in any of these ecosystems. This is because we were born as errors in connection with the “World White Web”, which fortunately prevented us from merging with it.

Anyways, we are not going to analyze whiteness anymore but will talk about our resistance stories and confrontation strategies to this all. Our non-white bodies and non-white non-binary identities have given rise to a parallel world that is a significant glitch within a larger system that has never been able to create a functional ecosystem alongside colonial-capitalist ecosystems. You become an error as soon as your existence threatens the identity of components of a power system in which you wouldn’t take part anyway.

Being part of a series of workshops covering community needs mapping, conceptualisation and ideation as well as identifying opportunities, this scenario workshop’s aim is to go through the ideation phases of shaping the MediaLab in order to build up our thoughts in a demographic mind mapping format and to create images for possible multiple futures. …

Space for Education, Exploration, Creation, and Joy

Oyoun MediaLab is a collaborative space designed to ignite creativity, critique, exploration, and joy at the intersections of technology, society, and art. In doing so, the MediaLab centres decolonial, inclusive, and queer*feminist perspectives in line with Oyoun’s Code of Conduct

Oyoun has equipped the MediaLab space with various software and hardware tools and equipment, with an emphasis on making these accessible to the community and in turn letting the community shape the continuous development of the MediaLab.

These are the four pillars of the Oyoun MediaLab:

Educational Missions through Peer Learning

We kickstart this adventure with various workshops, offering a space for all tech enthusiasts to shape the future of MediaLab. In our first workshop, “Hacking Systems,” we held conversations about possibilities and the lab’s potential, exploring ideas collectively. Together, we aim to create opportunities for our community, embracing the ethos of a hackerspace.

Following this, a series of workshops is planned, covering community needs mapping, conceptualisation and ideation as well as identifying opportunities. Workshop participants are encouraged to utilise the MediaLab space for their own educational purposes or become involved as active members.

Collaboration and Co-Exploration

Artists, curators, designers, researchers, and all creative folks are invited to develop and share ideas or projects at different stages. Together we can assess what resources are currently available at Oyoun to support ideas and projects further..

Regular meetups at the MediaLab are open for people from different fields to get to know each other, connect around topics and ideas, and start collaborating.

Open Access to Tools and Technologies

A crucial facet of MediaLab is making digital equipment accessible to all. We offer the opportunity to book the MediaLab space or individual machines, allowing you to bring your ideas to life independently. Simply reach out to us at space@oyoun.de, briefly describe your intentions, and we’ll find a suitable time together to use the space or request assistance.

Digital Art Performances

In addition to our core strategies, MediaLab actively supports digital artists by providing spaces for their performances. Our dedicated curatorial team, along with our esteemed MediaLab members, offer guidance and support to these artists, ensuring their digital art thrives.

Equipment

Our MediaLab provides the tools and resources to explore web technologies and frameworks, virtual, augmented and mixed reality, to experiment with game engines like Unreal Engine and Unity as well as design, photo and video editing tools.

Our space is equipped with a 3D printer, a laser engraving machine, a CNC machine, a programmable sewing machine, Additionally, our IoT station offers tools and microcomputers like Arduino. We continue to add tools and equipment and will update the list continuously. Please do share if you require specific tools and we will do our best to accommodate.
